Commonly referred to as Alberta Jade, the stone is actually a type of petrified wood. It was formed as the result of microcrystalline quartz depositing into the pores and cells of trees that fell 60-90 million years ago during the Cretaceous and Paleocene periods in the area that is now Alberta, Canada.
