The quartz stone family is extremely large and varied. Some of the more famous members include amethyst (purple quartz), citrine(yellow quartz), smoky quartz (black), rutilated quartz (quartzes with other minerals growing inside them), as well as all the various agates and jaspers.  Quartz may be found worldwide including many Canadian locations.

Clear or white Quartz is often found in crystal form and is the most often sought after for its healing or crystal properties.  Quartz is said to receive, activate, store, transmit and amplify energy.  It is also said to be an emotional balancer as it dispels negativity.  It is the stone used most often for meditation.

Rose quartz is a pink colored semi-precious gemstone. The pink color is caused by traces of manganese or titanium and will range from a light to dark pink color. The stone makes beautiful jewellery once it has been cut and polished. It is also used in massive form to make candle holders, and it may be carved into unusual shapes by expert craftsmen. 

Rose Quartz speaks directly to the Heart Chakra, and serves as an important talisman of relationships. It is good at attracting new love, intimacy or relationships, as well as inspiring beauty and imagination.

Some believe the stone can cool a hot temper and enhance self-confidence and creativity. It is also said to help clear stored anger, resentment, guilt and fear and will reduce stress and tension. It is also worn for meditation purposes.  

Amethyst: A favorite material of ancient cultures, amethyst has endured the ages as one of man's most prized possessions.  Amethyst ranges in color from a very light lavender to a deep violet shade of purple sometimes with slight hues of pink and red. Banded amethyst or cape amethyst may have lines of agate or chalcedony running through the amethyst. This may also be called chevron amethyst.  

The main Canadian source of amethyst is near Thunder Bay, Ontario where mining has taken place intermittently over the last one hundred years.  Scientists believe the amethyst find near Thunder Bay to be over one billion years old.  Amethyst is found worldwide and has the distinction of being the birthstone for February and the official gemstone of the province of Ontario. Some believe that amethyst has calming and protective qualities and that wearing amethyst will increase inspiration and intuition.

This stone requires special care - exposure to water and other chemicals, such as lotions or perfumes, will damage it over time. If you polish the jewellery, avoid polishing the stone itself. A silver-cleaning dip should never be used with this piece.
