Bivalve mollusks include cockles, scallops, razor shells, oysters, mussels, and clams.  The bivalves often resemble fossil brachiopods or spirifers but closer inspection reveals important differences.  Most bivalves have shells composed of two parts or valves.  Often these shells were hinged; the two shells were held shut by interior muscles on the creature.  Most bivalves were marine dwellers, but some lived in lakes and rivers.  Scientists use height, length, thickness, the beak or mouth, and ornamentation to identify different bivalve types.  Gryphaea is a fossil that takes a nice polish as they are usually replaced by agate. Chlamys is a type of shell similar to today’s common scallops.  Pecten are another type of bivalve.  Fossil bivalves may be found worldwide.  Bivalves first came on the scene over 440 million years ago.  Most fossil bivalves are between 3 million and 75 million years old.  In fact, certain bivalves still exist today.  This makes the bivalve one of the worlds most successful creatures.

This is a genuine fossil and no two are exactly the same. Please note that the item you receive will have slight variations from the one photographed.
